Summer in Bamberg![]()
Located north of Nuremberg, Bamberg is a historic town surrounded by a couple of idyllic sites. It's not only a nice place for sightseeing, but also has a university, lots of breweries and Biergärten.
On a hot summer day I visited the small, but beautifully situated Palace Zwirnitz. Its builder probably had in mind exactly this kind of weather, because he placed a wood with shady paths next to the castle (complete with artificial rocks and an open air theater stage).
A bit bigger than Zwirnitz, Palace Pommersfelden offers some beautiful sights, too. But instead of a shady wood, it only has a deer park.
Vierzehnheiligen is a convent and place of pilgrimage located between Bamberg and Coburg. If you want to take a look at it from above, you should climb the Staffelberg. This mountain isn't exceptionally high (539m), but is crowned by an idyllic plateau which offers a great view.
Coburg's main attraction is its medieval castle complex, located on a hill overlooking the town.
