LeanWeb

Derived from the Internet Junkbuster, LeanWeb is a tool for removing user-defined parts from Web pages. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License.

LeanWeb is mainly intended for users of 3Com's Palm Computing Platform or a WinCE device who want to view Web pages on their handheld, without having to scroll through all the unnecessary clutter present on modern Web pages. By removing this clutter, the required storage size is often significantly reduced, too.

LeanWeb also can be used for customizing frequently visited Web pages. Don't like CNet's new layout or the banner ads at the top of CNN's pages? No problem, LeanWeb can remove them for you.

The program works as a HTTP proxy. As a consequence, it can be used with every program that allows you to select one, and it can be combined with other proxies.

The C source for Linux and a pre-compiled binary for MS Windows are included. Please be aware that you should have some HTML knowledge if you want to use LeanWeb. Otherwise, you won't be able to define filters, and the LeanWeb distribution comes with no pre-defined filters. Also, depending on where you live, use of this software may be against the law, as it can be employed to alter copyrighted material.

P.S.: A while after I wrote LeanWeb, I found Sitescooper. This Perl script (Linux and Windows) automatically retrieves the stories from several news websites, trims off extraneous HTML, and converts them into formats you can read on your Palm computing device. It's like AvantGo and LeanWeb rolled into one, with lots of improvements and additional features.
