Wendelstein
I first read about the Wendelstein in a newspaper. As it is one of the
most popular mountains in the extended Munich area, this would not be
surprising - had it not been a paper published 800 km north of
Munich.
You cannot look this far from the summit, but the view on a clear day is spectacular. With 1838m it rises above all neighboring mountains and allows one to look far into the Alps.
In addition to that, its summit is easy to reach. A cable railway takes you up from Bayrischzell in 7 minutes, while the oldest rack-railroad of the German Alps scales the mountain's slopes on the opposite side in about 30 minutes.
But the most rewarding way to get to the top is on foot. You can walk more or less directly up from Bayrischzell, follow the railroad track from Brannenburg, or start in Fischbachau.
In the autumn, when the leaves turn red and the days are mostly sunny and not too hot, the way up from Osterhofen, which is located between Bayrischzell and Fischbachau, is also nice.
